Is Porn The Main Cause Of Rape
Pornography and pornographic material have been the butt of a big, heated debate since a few decades ago. Many have been calling for the distribution of such indecent and lewd material to be halted while some others have been shown their support to the adult entertainment industry and the by-products of it. Those who are against pornography and any sexually provocative material have one reason for their stand, they believe that porn leads to rape.
But, does porn really cause rape? The simple answer to that is no. Many studies have recently brought to light that consumption of pornographic material can actually lower the rate of rape occurrences. In a study conducted over the span of almost twenty years from 1980 to 2000, it was noted that states in the USA with Internet access and therefore, access to pornography, the number of rape cases dropped by 27%. On the other side of the coin, states with poor Internet access witnessed a whopping 53 percent increase in such cases.
From these numbers it can be easily noted that porn really isn’t the main cause of rape. If anything it, really has the opposite effect on the rape and here are also some more reasons as to why porn really isn’t the main cause of such sexually violent events.
#1 Not Everything Is Violent
Most people have a pre-conceived thought that all porn would show extremely violent sexual acts and thus, they make an inaccurate conclusion that porn causes rape, due to the display of such violence. In fact, most porn is not even violent. It’s just the same as what you would do with your partner, just that a video gets made and it’s plastered all over the Internet like a free resource to get off. The number of violent porn is so miniscule that it’s effect is almost negligible, relative to the rest of the pornographic content.
#2 It’s A Professional Industry
Most of the porn stars and the acts that they conduct on video have been pre-planned are made upon consent of all the parties involved. The stars, especially the males, would only carry out the planned acts and any impromptu acts that has been explicitly agreed to by the female stars. Aside from the planning and consented acts, the stars are also given time to prepare before a shoot so as no one gets injured. If this does happen, there will be people on standby to assist, just like any other occupational hazard.

#3 Responsible Porn
Porn sites now require an age verification in order to access their sites and most sites have now introduced filters and special tags on their videos. Using these tags, any violent or excessive videos, most of which are homemade by people who are like you or I, can be filtered out and hidden from display on their sites. The industry is also more actively advocating safe sex and have more videos which publicly display consent from the parties involved, especially females. In addition to all this, the videos are also named appropriately, avoiding harsh or borderline violent descriptions or titles, as part of their efforts.
#4 Helps You Let Off Steam
If anything, having more porn means that you have more options to enjoy your me time. Studies have shown that millennial women are becoming less interested in entering a relationship and those who are, are looking for a more platonic companionship. As such, lots of people depend on porn to help them fulfill their sexual needs without having to resort to sexual violence upon another person.
#5 The Research Has Been Done
A group of researchers at UCLA have had conducted a study on the correlation of porn and instances of rape. They surveyed a group of law-abiding men and a group of convicted rapists or pedophiles that were currently serving time for their actions to see if they could give an estimate on how long they spend watching or consuming pornographic material. When the results of the survey came in, they discovered that the actual group that committed rape actually allowed themselves much lesser amounts of porn, compared to normal citizens. This proves that pornography actually provides a better outlet for sexual needs, instead of committing rape, pedophilia and other sexually inappropriate crimes.
Is Rape One Of The Consequences Of Porn?
Rape is a serious crime, bordering even on crime against a huge portion of humanity. However, to cite pornography as the cause of such heinous crimes is actually misleading information.
