The topic of the marijuana legalization has been a heated debate for quite some time now. However, lots of states have begun to take stands on the topic and some have gone on to legalize the use of weed, for example states such as Washington and Colorado.

However, it seems that many people claim that weed legalization has brought about many after effects to society, and from the data that we have at the moment, it seems that the pros and cons are tied. Let’s have a look at what effects weed legalization have caused in society and to what extent these effects are detrimental to a functional and harmonious community.

Is the legalization of weed a good thing?

#1 People Who Smoke Weed Cause More Accidents

A simple correlation would be able to tell you that people who are high on a joint should not be allowed to maneuver a motorized vehicle. However, reports are that people who have been driving high has gone up 50% with lesser fatalities. Aside from that, the number of people driving drunk have gone down by 33%. Although the number of high drivers getting into accidents have been increasing, it seems like these accidents are just minor bumps and you can’t really help yourself from imagining a group of stoned bumping into each other like bumper cars at a fair.

Since the legalization of weed, lots of marijuana related admissions have been recorded in medical facilities nationwide. However, a majority of them have been children, who were admitted for accidental ingestion of weed, commonly from eating pot brownies prepared by their parents or guardians. But, these numbers are encouraging. No, not in terms of allowing kids to have a go at hallucinogenic desserts, but legalization of weed makes it much easier for parents to seek medical care for their kids, who have unknowingly ingested the marijuana through sweet treats. Obviously, parents aren’t feeding weed to their kids, let’s get that straight.

#3 Tourists Come In For A Joint

That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. The more tourists come into the country, for whatever reason, it always puts a smile on the country’s economy. In 2015 alone, the state of Colorado made a profit of a whopping $2.6 billion after people started flocking the state for some legalized weed. However, a downside could be unruly behaviour and more foreigners having run-ins with the law. But, if they’re coming in for the weed, chances are that they’re too busy getting high than starting a drunk fight with someone, so all good.

#4 More Revenue for States That Legalized Weed

Of course, with the number of people getting their weekly dose of weed visiting states that have legalized marijuana, there is bound to be additional revenue being generated in these states, just like the example of Colorado above. What Colorado did with the $2.6 billion that it earned in 2015 is channeled it into public schools, to better the facilities and quality of public education for local students. So essentially, your weed trips down to these states have been putting kids through a better education. Good on you.Legalization of Marijuana is something positive?- Pros and Cons

The pros and cons are indeed tied, however, the cons are not as adverse as they would be in a normal setting. So, we could actually count those as a win for everyone.
