Legalizing Abortion : Is It A Crime

The debate between the pro-life and pro-choice groups have been a long-standing battle and as of now, no one seems to have been able to reach a conclusive outcome that is acceptable to everyone in society. Most people who are devout religionists have shown strong opposition against the idea of legalizing abortions, quoting scriptures and attributing the abortions as “interfering with God’s work”, hence their stand on pro-life. Most rape survivors, people who miscarry and a good amount of women in society have stood their ground on their pro-choice beliefs.

However, what the pro-choice movement have been fighting for has been viewed by most as an act of murder, citing that the fetus is already a form of life from the point of conception. But, that isn’t much of a valid reason.

Why Abortion Is Not Murder

At 6-8 weeks, the fetus can be likened to a blob of jello. Albeit having a beating heart and some forming limbs, the fetus is unable to survive outside of the mother’s womb for very long. Most fetuses cannot survive outside, even with the help of a respirator, at any time before 21 weeks of age. Any life form that is unable to sustain itself without the help of another life-form cannot be considered as a living being as it isn’t actually living, if it requires the external support from another person.

Fetuses also lack the necessary brain and limb connections at any time between 24 weeks, which is why any procedure carried out during the abortion will not inflict any form of pain to the fetus. Studies have shown that although brain activity and heartbeat is present, there isn’t nearly enough nerves to allow the fetus to be fully functional or to be able to realize it’s presence and the womb around it. The fetus would never know when it was conceived and neither realize that it has been aborted.

Why Safe Abortions Should Be Readily Available

Unwanted pregnancies have been reported in soaring numbers in the recent years and these unwanted pregnancies can be the result of forced impregnation in a domestic relationship or even the by-product of an instance of rape. As such, the circumstances under which these women have conceived are traumatizing and more importantly, the conception was against their will, which is a violation of basic human rights.

Maternal death rates are also on the rise with a surge in reports of complications during childbirth. Lots of women suffer from diseases that can be life-threatening when they do go through with the process of squeezing a child out of their body. Pre-eclampsia, natal high blood pressure and ectopic pregnancies are just some of the main causes of death during childbirth.o see life outside its mother’s womb.

It would not make much sense to risk the life of a person who has lived 20-30 years of their life, forming relationships and connections with the people around them only to be taken away in order to give life to something that may or may not live to see life outside its mother’s womb.

Having an abortion can be likened to pulling the plug one someone who has been declared medically brain-dead. If the latter can be considered as an act of empathy and is accepted as a way to reduce the suffering of someone, abortion should also be considered as such. In short, all women are entitled to have a say in what goes on within and with their bodies. If you’re one of those being harassed with anonymous hate texts for being pro-choice, a quick phone lookup through public records will tell you who’s trying to change your stand.
