Prom. The most important event of any teen’s life, not to mention the amount of peer-pressure involved to have a date that night and to also be looking their absolute best. However, peer-pressure may not be so great at times and the social pressure that your teen may receive from his or her peers may induce them to do something that may harm themselves and in the process, others as well. #1 No Alcohol
Alcohol is a gateway drug and eventhough teens love spiking their drinks for good fun, alcohol in the hands of teens has never had a happy ending. Incidents of drunk driving, accidental pregnancies and even rape has been known to occur at prom so it is best that your teen stay sober and be able to make sound decisions at all times. Be strict with this rule and be sure to let them know the consequences if they decide to flaunt this rule.
#2 Limit Makeout Sessions
Teens are just at the age where their hormones are at a spike and they’re just dying to have sex. However, that may not always be a good thing, especially if they choose not to use protection. Get them to limit their activities to only second base and should things escalate to third base, encourage them to use protection at all times. Explain to your teen the effects of having unprotected sex and how it can affect their quality of life in the long-run so that they better understand why you have such rules in place.
#3 Set An Emergency Speed Dial
If your teen is in trouble, whether they are being followed by someone or have had their drink spiked by a friend, they should always have someone that they can call via speed dial. Be sure to let your teen know to set your phone number and your spouse’s phone number on speed dial. If they have an older sibling, you can also get them to save their number to speed dial. The more number you can provide them with the better the chance of them getting immediate help when they need it.
#4 Bring Along Prom Safety Tools
Just because they’re out to prom, doesn’t mean that their safety can be guaranteed. Convince your teen to take their pepper sprays and tazers with them in their purse or pockets, should they encounter someone with ill will against them. These are extremely useful for those who decide to go out to spend the rest of the night in town and for those who walk back from prom with friends.
