Racism has been a very hotly discussed topic, not only in the United States, but also in other countries that have a large population of multi-ethnic people, who have been living together in as citizens of the same country. Racism can be quite a common occurrence in such a melting pot of cultures, namely due to stereotypes that arise from a habit of a group of people or maybe even a cultural custom that may seem out of place among other cultures, and as a result, is attributed to that particular group.
What actually is racism?
Racism is defined as the prejudice and discrimination of a group or ethnicity in a society with the aim of claiming that one’s own race is much superior. Many people assume that stating or observing a stereotype is automatically racist. It is actually not, if the said stereotype is not being used to revile or criticize a certain ethnicity or race, with intention of portraying one’s own race as a much superior one. Racism is commonly act of hatred that may cause emotional or even physical damage to a person of a different race. But, what will happen when these acts of hatred eventually spiral out of control?

How Racism Impact Our Society
#1 By Societal Disharmony
The main side effect of racism is the breakdown of society itself. As ethnic groups begin to seed the sense of superiority amongst themselves and the younger generation of their ethnic groups, there would be a significantly less amount of interaction between ethnic groups. As time goes by, the integration between different ethnic members of the society will slowly falter causing an evident disharmony between members of the public. As such, day-to-day interactions become difficult, strained and possibly may become a cause of a brewing a sense of hate for one another.

#2 Cultivating Hate
As many of you may already know, racism naturally breeds hate towards a certain ethnic group. And as history has proved time and again, hate is not something that we would want to have in a multi-cultural and diverse society. Due to such racism, parents may teach their children this hate and as it grows within the individual and is passed on to their children, the cycle becomes never-ending one, leaving more damage in its wake than the generation prior to it. Racism also causes us to be more sensitive to a fault or crime committed by a certain race, causing a rise in instances of social justice, which is more likely to be fueled by the hate rather than distaste or disagreement to the crime committed.
#3 Street Violence
Racism breeds hate, that’s for sure. But, hate can breed lots of other things and street violence is one of them. Often times, we hear hate crimes happening in big cities and sometimes, even in our own backyard. We may think that this may be due to personal differences that the people involved may have had, but study has shown that most hate crime has been proven to be a result of hatred towards a certain ethnic group or a belief that a particular group of people should be treated with a relatively lower respect compared to their own. Read up on how serious street violence can be if left to breed amongst members of society.
Racism is a worrying issue that needs to be addressed in the soonest possible. Although the effects of it may not seem very threatening right now, racism ties in with sentiments of a certain ethnic group and people are very possessive when it comes to their beliefs and racial sentiments. Should this intricate balance be disturbed, even in the slightest, there may be a bigger problem that would arise as a result.
