Marriage is the union of two hearts, two people who have vowed to stay by each other, only in death will they part. Although most marriages start out in this fashion, full of hope and promise of a new life together, not many of them actually survive the trials and tribulations that come along with being married.

Lots of people are living in unhappy marriages, wondering about what had gone wrong in their fairy tale. There are quite a number of factors that can cause an unhappy marriage. Let’s have a look at what some of the causes are.

How To Know When Your Marriage Is Over?

#1 No Communication With Your Partner

Communication is key. As partners, you will need to have an open communication channel and let the other know what one is feeling. Without an open discussion about certain things, you may leave your spouse bitter and this can later lead to misunderstandings and huge fights, causing a break in your relationship. Talk things out and always try to find middle ground so that everyone is happy.

#2 All Out of Love

Sometimes, the undeniable truth is that the both of you have fallen out of love with each other. Your partner may not be who you thought they were, before you’d gotten married. And, there is also truth in the saying “You never know someone until you’ve lived with them”. This happens quite a bit and it’s always better to make the decision to lead your lives separately while still being good friends.

#3 Spiraling Addictions

Addictions can also be a cause of unhappiness in a marriage. Be it yourself or your spouse that has a serious and damaging addiction to something, say gambling or alcohol, this would definitely take a toll on your relationship as a married couple, creating a chasm between the two of you. If you are facing issues with addiction, it is always best to seek professional help, to save yourself and your marriage.

#4 No Satisfaction on Sexual Needs

Being married doesn’t always guarantee that you will be fulfilled sexually. Some people may have a stronger need compared to their partner and arguments can ensue when one of them is not satisfied enough. This spurs a search for something that can fuel their sexual necessity, outside of their marriage and from here on, things can only get ugly. Openly discuss your sexual needs with your partner, give and take where possible, a little compromise never hurt anyone.

#5 Family From Hell

Having family members or in-laws that keep putting their noses into your personal struggles with your partner can be infuriating to both you and your other half. A marriage only has space for two people, any more than that and it will be a recipe for the perfect disaster. Try your best to solve your marital problems with each other. As much as family need to stick together and help each other out, some issues are best settled on by just the both of you.

An unhappy marriage can definitely be turned around, but the decision to do so lies in the hands of you and your spouse. You would be surprised at how far even the smallest bit of effort can go. A lot of the time, the unhappiness is caused by an external factor and with a little bit more love, compromise and understanding, you would be back on track to the wedded life that you’ve read about in fairy tales.
