Why Military Sexual Assault Rates Are Rising
Sexual assault has been a long standing issue and both men and women have fallen prey to sexual predators in their workplaces, homes and even out on the street. Much has been done by the government, volunteers groups and even organizations to try and curb the rising numbers of sexual assault cases, within general society.
What About Within Military Groups?
According to the latest report, sexual assault rates within the military have climbed 38%, and the majority of these cases were reported by young women within the age range of 17 to 24. There have been a few measures that have been implemented in the military system to prevent such things from happening, yet such cases are still being reported at a much higher rate, every year. Let’s look at some of the reasons why these numbers are climbing higher in these recent years.

Military Sexual Assaults Increase
#1 Failing Measures
Lots of the measures put in place by the government in order to halt military rape in its tracks is currently not effective, given the lifestyle of the people in military. Despite having multiple programs that discuss the effects of sexual assault and also programs for victims to report serial rapists and sexual predators within members of the military, none of them have had any effect on reducing the current numbers that have been reported on such events.
#2 Rank Power
Another huge problem that leads to frequent cases of rape is the rank power in the military. The military system revolves around these ranks and anyone that is superior must be given the due respect and their orders heeded at all times. Many high ranking military officers misuse their power and position to get young women (and men) to satisfy their sexual needs. Should the victim refuse, their life in military base would be made extremely hard to bear and their progression into higher ranks may be halted by these high ranking sexual exploiters.
#3 Possible Intoxication
In all the cases of reported military rape, about 62% of them has alcohol included in the equation. Military groups have been known to have a high consumption of alcohol, particularly because of the stressful nature of their workplace. However, these numbers have shown that alcohol may be the main culprit behind such unsolicited sexual advances on young women serving in the military. A measure that can prevent this includes a controlled amount of alcohol distributed among members of the military. After all, you can’t really be drinking at your workplace, can you?
#4 Serial Misconduct
Some people are just born with the uncontrollable sexual urge and end up turning into sexual predators, later in life. The thing with this is that it becomes a recurring problem for them and the people around them, the symptoms and traits likened to someone with a mental illness. In such cases, the military has to be more proactive and seek these sexual predators who have been most likely misusing their ranks and power to coerce sexual favors out of their female colleagues.

The military is regarded as a respectable and disciplined institution, yet such cases are still being reported and the number are only rising from here. Stricter rules, harsher punishments and military sanctions should be in place for such predators who prey on younger, helpless troop members.
There should also be additional programs in place, designed specifically to prevent military rape and sexual assault by training women to fight off their assailant and to be able to speak up against their higher ranking officers, if such indecent behavior is spotted or has been shown towards them.
